I challenge you to get out of your own head, get out of your own way, and follow your gut. So this Pride Month, stop worrying about trying to fix the world in one go. We didn’t see any of that happening when we thought about wanting to help.

So many concepts and ideas that we’ve struggled to explain now on full display for them to see. Our friends and family can now watch, learn and participate WHILE AT THE SAME TIME be exposed to new themes, subject matter, pop culture, and most importantly, new people and communities. Now all of a sudden that new community not only has a face, but a name. But now they can watch regularly, and develop favorites (it's a proven fact that you are NEVER your family's favorite), and learn people's names and personalities. They sorta kinda get what it is from that one time they visited and came to your show. But ask a handful of us and I bet that to this day, many of us still struggle to explain to our families what it is that we actually do, and why leaving was such a good idea, and what exactly that Sportz Comedy thing is. Many of us left our hometowns and families for a myriad of reasons to come to Chicago to perform and do comedy. But something we didn’t think about or consider was that for the first time in practically ever certain family and friends of ensemble members were going to be able to watch on a regular basis.

Plus it kept us busy having to design and run things, it gave our ensemble a distraction from lockdown by doing shows, and it kept the theater name out there. When we moved our show online we saw an opportunity to help by entertaining people who were scared and locked indoors (this was before we all realized we were gonna be at home for quite a while). That one simple thought can carry so much more weight than people think it does. Did they consider that this one march would lead to more, and not just in Chicago, but all over the world? Was there a second to ponder that this one day would help jump start a movement that would touch the lives of so many people? That this would lead to things like Harvey Milk becoming the first openly gay elected official in the history of California or Same Sex Marriage being legalized here in the United States? Most likely they didn’t think about any of this at all, honestly they were probably just thinking, “I know I wanna help, and THIS is how I can do that right now.” What I really wonder and think about is what those first 100-200 people thought about during that march in 1970. But this is all information that you could find with a quick Google and a few minutes of reading.
